Why Variable Speed? — Benefits

The variable speed system is considered to be environmentally friendly due to its lower fuel consumption.
Reductions of between 35 and 50% can be achieved when compared with fixed speed generators on typical domestic variable loads.

Reduction of exhaust pollution to atmosphere.
Lower fuel consumption also reduces exhaust pollution at the same levels.

Smaller battery storage system required.
We recommend a battery storage capacity that meets your requirements during quiet times. This is generally an 8-hour period when the load demand is less than 1 KW/e.
The variable speed system operates best at low loads — as low as 1 KW/e. The more power stored in batteries, the lower the efficiency of the system. It's also worth noting that smaller storage battery systems can also help reduce capital cost.

An Optional Spa Heater can further reduce fuel costs.
The optional home hot water heater for the land based system is only available with a 9.5 KW/e Yanmar engine. This system recovers engine waste heat that can be circulated to the jacuzzi providing free heating capability. This eliminates the need for a gas or electric heater, thus no additional fuel is consumed and there is subsequently less pollution.

The system overall performance.
There is a general misconception that using a smaller generator (KW/e rating) with a load sharing inverter to meet peak load demands and storing energy into a battery bank for later withdrawal is efficient.
Consider however, there is an initial loss whilst charging the batteries via the generator, even when the generator is charging at peak efficiency. This power is then stored in the battery and withdrawn via the inverter.

During each of these stages there are losses and this is cumulatively calculated to be in the order of +20%. It is therefore far more efficient to draw the power directly from the variable speed generator when the load is > than 1 KW/e.
